Lionel Smit is a contemporary artist that was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1982. From a young age, it was evident that Lionel had an artistic flair, which is why it seemed only fitting that he attend Pro Arte Alphen Park – a dual medium school with values in encouraging creativity and innovation in its learners. Soon after graduating school, Lionel started exhibiting his work and found his way to Cape Town where he now resides – although often finds himself travelling the country and abroad exhibiting his work.
A Contemporary Portraiture
Best known for his contemporary portraiture executed through monumental canvasses and sculptures, Lionel Smit is represented locally in South Africa and internationally in London and New York – where he installed a sculpture in Union Square. He exhibits regularly on solo ￼shows and is considered one of SA’s youngest investment artists.
He has also had solo ￼exhibitions and been selected as a featured artist in several art fairs across Amsterdam, Germany, ￼India, Miami, Monaco, London and Hong Kong. Over the past 10 years he has established a substantial international following with collectors ranging from the Standard Chartered Bank to Laurence Graff Art Collection at Delaire Graff Wine Estate.
Where Lionel Smit has exhibited
Lionel Smit’s painting has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, where it received the Viewer’s Choice Award, as well as selected as the ‘face’ of the BP Portrait Award 2013 for all campaigns. He was recently honoured with a Ministerial Award from the Department of Culture for Visual Art and a highlight of his career has been the publication of one of his paintings on the cover of Christie’s Auction Catalogue.
